From the DSM to BDSM: The Role of High-Intensity Kink Play in the Healing and Liberation of Black Women

U.S. Black women have been using all forms of pleasure and eroticism to respond to the intergenerational effects of chattel slavery and genocide. While developing long-standing strategies for protecting our bodies from the constant gaze of white supremacy, we have simultaneously pushed for the complexity of our pleasure and desires to disrupt dominant discourses of silencing and erasure. This presentation interrogates how Black women are currently engaging in high-intensity BDSM/Kink as “hair of the dog” medicine to reconnect to ourselves and our bodies and how the intersection of eroticism and power can itself become a tool for liberation and restoration. This is also a call-in to sexuality scholars, healers, and therapists to cease pathologizing Black women and engage us in conversations where we are holistically affirmed. If we are not real, whole and human to our therapists, how can we be transformed? Why should we continue to seek you out?
