“I Don’t Think You Can Have Alpha Males in Poly”: Polyamory’s Changing Face of Masculinity

Polyamorous men’s platonic relationships with their male metamours (partners’ partners) often defy gender norms about men’s intimacy. A series of in-depth, qualitative interviews with two dozen polyamorous men of varying backgrounds revealed the process of social learning polyamorous men underwent as they developed their polymasculinities, all in the context of our larger societal norms and expectations. This session will describe that process and discuss its implications for educators, therapists, and counsellors working with men.
