This presentation focuses on providing a meaningful synthesis of the topic of shadow play and its implications for trauma informed sex therapy. Recent years have seen a rise in academic as well as community interest on fantasies involving forced sexual experiences. While there is historic focus in the therapeutic community on preventing trauma repetition, this may serve to pathologize the force fantasies of sexual trauma survivors. In this presentation, we will explore clinical examples of working with historically clients who have implemented elements of their historic traumatic experiences into their adult erotic narratives (shadow play), and discuss ways that clinicians can approach this complex topic from a non-pathologizing therapeutic perspective.
