Pain is a form of sensation that is interpreted differently by a variety of people. Multiple factors affect the experience and subsequent effects of pain, such as extent of injury, emotional state, and environmental context. In this lecture, we will define several distinct types of pain states and the ways in which they are processed by the body and the mind. We will explore how pain presents in clinical situations, the connection between acute and chronic pain states, and their effect on sexuality and its expression. Pain has been used in ritual for centuries by various cultures to augment intimacy, connection, and allow for vulnerability in relationships; we will explore how some individuals and cultures use pain as a means of augmenting connection and pleasurable sensation. These historical case studies reveal alternate options for reframing the experience of pain from an “all or nothing experience” to a complex and versatile facet of the human condition.

This workshop will delve into the current research and clinical applications of psychedelics specifically for aiding clients in recovery from sexual trauma and dysfunction and increasing satisfaction in sexual relationships. We will discuss the therapeutic applications and current research on MDMA (ecstasy), psilocybin (mushrooms) and ayahuasca to gain understanding of the neurological, emotional and spiritual healing enabled by these medicines allowing clients to reclaim their erotic identities. Legal, ethical and spiritual issues relating to psychedelics and sexuality for therapists and clients will also be discussed in depth. We will define what a “psychedelic” approach to treatment means and how it might allow clinicians to formulate more holistic views of their clients’ sexualities.
Please note: The use of psychedelics outside of FDA-approved research is currently illegal. This workshop will discuss legal research and its ramifications.

We will invite an exploration of the shift from a reductive sex addiction model to our constructivist biopsychosocial model of problematic sexual behavior; a view that sees problematic sexual behavior as multiply meaningful in ways that are unique to each person. This latter perspective suggests the necessity of integrative harm reduction psychotherapy (IHRP) that enables a non-presumptive collaborative inquiry into the unique meanings and functions of sexual behavior for each patient, that yields a personalized therapeutic plan. IHRP combines relational psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioral and mindfulness strategies in seven therapeutic tasks that will be described. Case material will be used to illustrate.

Sexual activity between men has long been in the shadows of society and even science. We have had the labels of homosexual and bisexual – but what if those labels don’t fit some men? According to research, there are millions of heterosexual men who are engaging in sexual activity with other men. Are they really gay? In denial? What’s going on? This is far beyond “down-low”. Young people today are less concerned than ever with sexual labels. The sexual fluidity of Millennials can be confounding to older generations. This discussion will look at new research about this fascinating phenomenon and what this subculture looks like. We will look at the behaviors, activities, and rules of engagement in this world.
